HOW DO I APPLY FOR A SIGN PERMIT?
You can apply for a sign permit in three ways:
1. PHONE: 1 781 431 1019 Ext. 2238. We can mail you the awning and sign application form with, a list of required application materials and the sign regulations.
2. INTERNET: download the application form, design guidelines, application checklist and design / sign regulations from the Town of Wellesley Website. You can also e-mail your request for information or application form to Ethan Parsons: eparsons@wellesleyma.gov
3. PAY US A VISIT: come to Planning Department [Town Hall, Lower Level] between 8:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m., M-F.
WHAT DO I NEED FOR A COMPLETE SIGN APPLICATION?
The following materials are required to make the application complete:
8 sets of:
» Completed application form.
» Scaled, dimensioned drawing of the sign/awning including lettering, borders and other design elements [min. scale 3/4"].
» Location plan for standing signs showing distance setback from property lines [min. scale 1/16"].
» Drawing of façade showing proposed placement of signs/awnings in relation to trim/significant architectural elements [min scale 1/ 4;"].
Plus:
» Color photographs of the façade and facades of adjacent buildings.
» Samples of all colors proposed to be used on sign or awning.
» Appropriate fee: if application is by right one check for $50 is required. If application requires special permit one check for $150 is required. Please make all checks payable to the “ Town of Wellesley”.
WHAT ARE THE REQUIREMENTS FOR A CONSTRUCTION PROJECT (NOT SIGNS OR AWNINGS) DESIGN REVIEW APPLICATION?
The following materials are required to make the application complete:
For all projects:
8 sets of:
» Written description of proposed change.
» Description of materials exposed to view.
» Scaled elevation drawings.
» Landscape and grading plan showing all improvements.
» Plan showing outdoor lighting and signage.
Plus:
» Color photographs of subject building or property.
» Samples of materials to be used.
In addition, Major Construction and PSI shall include:
» Scaled site plan.
» A three dimensional model of the project.
Scaled drawings shall show:
» Details of major architectural elements.
» Dimensions of building or addition.
» Any mechanical equipment on roof.
Scaled site plan shall show:
» Existing and proposed boundary lines including lot dimensions and area.
» Location of all existing and proposed structures.
» Location of existing and proposed driveways, parking areas, handicapped ramp, and all site improvements.
» Location of zoning lines and existing zoning districts.
» Layout of all parking spaces, including dimensions, total number [standard, compact and handicapped].
» Location of all open space including existing and proposed landscaped areas [show all major trees including street trees].
» Details of landscaping indicating the types and size of trees and shrubs to be planted; and how existing trees will be protected during construction.
Required application fee is $150 for Minor Construction and by-right antenna projects and $300 for Major Construction, PSI and special permit antenna projects. All checks payable to “Town of Wellesley”.
WHEN SHOULD I SUBMIT APPLICATIONS FOR REVIEW BY THE DESIGN REVIEW BOARD?
You can submit an application anytime but complete applications are due one week prior to Design Review Board meetings to be placed on the next agenda.
WHEN DOES THE DESIGN REVIEW BOARD MEET?
The Design Review Board meets every second and fourth Wednesday of the month at 7:00 p.m., Town Hall, Lower Level or Great Hall (check with Ethan 781-431-1019, 2238). The Board's meeting announcements, agenda and minutes are posted on this website.
