Lower Falls Riverway Project
In 1994 the Planning Board completed and published a new Comprehensive Plan that recommended detailed studies be done on each of the commercial sectors of Town. The Lower Falls Riverway Project involves the former Boston and Albany Railroad Right of Way, which extends from Washington Street in Wellesley to the existing railroad bridge over the Charles River at the Newton town line. The project will look at the potential development of a small park for the Lower Falls area of Town and the future extension of the trail across the Charles River through Newton to the Riverside MBTA Station. The Planning Board has hired Stoss Inc a landscape urbanism firm to conduct the study.

The Lower Falls Riverway Project will look at the following:

» Potential for a multi-purpose path

» Links to other state and town public lands;

» Development of a landscaping plan for the corridor;

» Schematic designs of the railroad bridge to improve aesthetics of the area and to insure safety for users;

» Lighting, benches and similar amenities;

» Outdoor vendor site;

» Access to the Charles River;

Location:

The project area is the former railroad right-of-way that connects Washington Street in the Lower Falls village of Wellesley to the existing old railroad bridge across the Charles River.  The entire length of the abandoned railroad right-of-way extends from the project area to the Riverside Railroad Station in Newton, MA.
