On May 3, 2011 the Board of Selectmen voted to adopt a new precinct map for the Town of Wellesley. The new map balances populations across the town to create 8 voting precincts and will become effective on January 1, 2012. The final map was approved by the State in August.
According to the 2010 US Census, Wellesley’s total population is 27,982 residents, requiring the town to add a new 8th voting precinct. (this includes resident students at Wellesley and Babson Colleges). This is the first time Wellesley has added a precinct since 1952. Each new precinct must average 3,498 residents (with no more than 5% variance). Each of our existing precincts must be modified to stay within the population target and to create the new precinct.
The addition of an 8th precinct will alter the representation in Town Meeting. Each new precinct will be allocated 30 Town Meeting Members. (down from 33 or 36 currently). At the March 2012 Annual Town Election all members who wish to continue serving will run from the re-drawn precincts. All 240 seats will be elected at that time. Members of the public who wish to run for Town Meeting are encouraged to contact the town clerk for information about how to run for office.
