TRAILS COMMITTEE
MEETING MINUTES
November 27, 2009
Attendees: Denny Nackoney, Miguel Lessing, John Schuler, Joan Gaughan, Diane Hall, Rina Rub, Bob White
The contractors have finished their work near the State St parking lot. While not totally acceptable to us, it is an improvement over the original effort. They have not reworked the gate near the east end of the football field. We will continue to monitor the entire Brook Path project with a special emphasis on the portion between State St and Paine St.
All the legal actions relating to the 27 Washington St (Grossman's) have been resolved. National Development is now free to proceed. The DCR will get permission from Wellesley's Wetland Commission on Dec 10 to proceed with the bridge and the temporary path. The DCR still needs to get permission from Newton's Commission, which may be more difficult given the very vocal opposition to the project from some of the Newton neighbors.
Walkers are still using the closed trail in the second Meadow in Centennial. After the meeting, Denny reinstalled the Trail Closed sign and placed some brush on the path. Additionally the DPW will not mow the section west of our reroute this fall.
We continue to be concerned with the graffiti on the Waban Arches. The MWRA is aware of the problem, but may be reluctant to proceed given the short turn around time between cleaning the Arches and the reappearance of the artwork. Although "Walks in Wellesley" notes that the Arches are in the Historic Register, we believe that they are not. I have notified the WCC.
Walker attendance was down for our Fall walks. We will survey walkers in the Spring and consider other means of announcing our walks. Rec needs our Spring walk schedule by Jan 8. We will finalize the walks at our January meeting.
Needham Boy Scouts installed a bog bridge on a wet Section of the Beard Trail near Cartwright Rd.
In a separate email, all Trail Monitors got an updated list of their responsibilities. Five thousand maps are on order which should hold us through the winter.
Diane will continue to investigate hats. The Committee likes the forest green with just a front logo. We have given her a budget of $500.
Y Stoner, a recent WHS graduate with trail construction experience, has rerouted a damp section of the Boulder Brook Path and closed a smaller trail which was close to the main trail.
The DPW will look at the wet section of the Crosstown Trail near Washington St and remove a leaner near Fairy Rock in Kelley Field.
Our next meeting will be Tuesday Jan 5th at 7:30.
